Using Daft Punk’s Get Lucky, David divides students by section (bass, cello, viola, violin) and they take turns playing each separate part by ear. After each section learns its part, everyone plays together to create the entire backing loop track that David performed previously.
Next, David introduces them to a technique called “the chop,” in which the students use the bottom half of their bow to make percussive noises on the strings. This shows them how to make drum noises on their strings, creating rhythms without any damage whatsoever to their instrument.
Once students are comfortable playing their parts, David introduces the basics of improvisation. After doing an improvisation game, he invites and encourages them to take a solo along while the rest of the class performs their parts.
