Monsterology: the Science and Culture of Fear
Monsters embody our deepest anxieties and vulnerabilities, but they also symbolize the mysterious and incoherent territory beyond the safe enclosures of rational thought. Exploring diverse sources, Dr. Asma unravels traditional monster stories and images for the clues they offer about the inner logic of an era’s fears and fascinations.
This illustrated keynote talk will tour the popular and lesser-known monsters of the Western tradition, illuminating the many ways monsters have become repositories for those human qualities that must be repudiated, externalized, and defeated.
Dr. Asma will also explore recent research into the neuroscience of fear and cognition. This cutting-edge science will be applied to some of our perennial experiences of horror.
