Jon Turk received his Ph.D. in chemistry in 1971, and wrote the first environmental science textbook in North America. For the past 45 years, he has engaged in extreme outdoor expeditions, many of them in the high arctic. He has climbed first ascent big walls on Baffin Island, mountain biked through the Gobi desert, and skied first descents in the Tien Shan Mountains in Kyrgyzia. Jon's two-year kayak passage across the North Pacific Rim was named by Paddler Magazine as one of the ten greatest sea kayaking expeditions of all times. His circumnavigation of Ellesmere with Erik Boomer was nominated by National Geographic as one of the top ten adventures of 2011 and was also awarded “Expedition of the Year” by Canoe and Kayak Magazine. Jon chronicles his journeys and mental and spiritual passages in a trilogy of three books: "In The Wake of the Jomon", about kayaking across the Pacific Ocean; "The Raven's Gift", that chronicles the teachings of one of the last Siberian Shamans who was born into a virtual Stone-Age existence, and "Crocodiles and Ice, A Journey into Deep Wilderness" about the Consciousness Revolution we sorely need to journey into the 21st Century with any semblance of sanity, joy, and compassion.

Crocodiles and Ice: A Journey into Deep Wild

Jon Turk

Crocodiles and Ice is a scientist/adventurer’s journey into a Conscious Revolution based on a deep, reciprocal communication with the Earth. The book highlights Turk’s award winning polar expedition to circumnavigate Ellesmere Island, as well as other, lesser known passages. But, more critically, he will tell the story of his lifelong journey from suburban Connecticut into a passion for Deep Wild, an ancient passage, repeated — in one form or another — a zillion times, and ignored just as often.

He invites his audience to listen to our Stone-Age ancestors, the poets of the ’60s, a wolf that lingers, a Siberian shaman, a Chinese bicycle nomad, and the landscapes themselves: to find Deep Wild as a foundation of solace, sanity, compassion, and hope.
