Dave is obsessed with creativity. He's been a musician, illustrator, comedian, poet, radio broadcaster and writer. But he spent most of his career working as an advertising creative. Before he quit the ad industry in 2010, he'd led the creative departments of some of the biggest and best agencies in London. Since then he's taught at universities around the world, from Santiago to Singapore, and advised numerous companies on how to improve their creativity. He strongly believes that everyone has the innate skills to be creative. So he focuses on ways to unlock the creativity in individuals and organizations. He advises on culture, processes, environment, skills and business strategy to create a holistic approach to practical creative thinking. He's a popular speaker on creativity and the creative industries. This has included a TEDx talk, Google's Remix conference and a keynote at the BBC's future of broadcast conference. In the last year he's spoken in New York, Cannes, Montenegro, Macedonia and up and down the British Isles. In 2012 he wrote A User Guide to the Creative Mind, which is now recommended reading for a number of advertising schools around the world. And he's contributed to several other books. In 2014 he wrote, directed and presented the TV show, The Day Before Tomorrow. It looks at how technology is shaking up the worlds of healthcare, education, entertainment, smart cities, banking and retail. And Dave would love to inspire you to boost your own creativity too.

A User Guide to the Creative Mind

Dave Birss

Creativity is a misunderstood topic. And it’s been misunderstood throughout history. The Greeks attributed the moment of inspiration to godlike Muses rather then seeing it as a human act. However, creativity is a process. And it’s something that everyone can get better at.

In this 2 hour workshop, we explain what a creative idea is and outline the process you need to go through to come up with one. We also share techniques that can help you come up with more ideas – before trying them out on a brief. It’s a practical session, focusing on concrete advice that can boost everyone’s creativity. And we’ll end with a Q&A.

After the session, we’ll send you a bespoke PDF copy of the book A User Guide to the Creative Mind to help the participants refer back to what they learned in the session.
